Coastal Resilience: Mitigating Threats for Healthy Oceans

Mallorca

Palma

Mallorca, the largest island of the Balearic archipelago, is located in the Mediterranean Sea and features a remarkable geographic and cultural diversity. Its capital, Palma, is a historical and administrative center with a long maritime tradition. The island’s natural environment, together with a history shaped by the interaction between people and landscape, makes it a relevant setting for examining issues related to sustainability, the environment, and socio-economic transformations in coastal regions.

How to get to Palma

The most convenient way to travel to the island is by plane, as the international airport of Palma de Mallorca offers an excellent connection to other Spanish and European cities.

Traveling by ferry is also a good option, especially if you decide to come with your own vehicle. Our two passenger ports (Palma and Alcúdia) are well connected to Barcelona, Valencia, Denia, Menorca and Ibiza. In addition, in October, you can reach the port of Alcúdia by ferry from Toulon (France).

Accommodation

Palma offers plenty of opportunities for accommodation, nevertheless we strongly advice to book well in advance as Palma is a city with a high demand on these dates.

The organization recommends the following hotels, which have provided a discount code for congress participants:
  • HOTEL PALLADIUM / Discount code: CSIC – 5% stackable discount valid until October 19

    Pg. de Mallorca, 40 – 07015 Palma

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares) is housed in a prominent building located in the heart of Palma de Mallorca. The structure blends modern functionality with elements of traditional Mediterranean architecture. It serves as the central headquarters for managing and overseeing the ports of the Balearic Islands, including Palma, Alcúdia, Maó, Eivissa (Ibiza), and La Savina (Formentera).

This strategic location on the waterfront offers direct views of the Port of Palma, one of the busiest and most important ports in the western Mediterranean. The building hosts administrative offices, meeting rooms, and facilities to coordinate port logistics, maritime traffic, and commercial activity across the islands.

How to get to the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands

On Foot
If you are in the city center of Palma (e.g., near the Cathedral or Passeig del Born), you can easily walk to the building in about 5 to 10 minutes. Just head toward the seafront—it’s located at the Moll Vell, near the marina and yacht docks.

By Public Transport
Several EMT Palma city buses stop near Moll Vell:

Line 1 (Airport – City – Port): connects the airport with the city center and port. Get off at stops like "Passeig Marítim – Moll Vell".

Lines 3, 15, 25, 35: these lines connect different areas of Palma to the city center, from which you can walk to the building.

By Car
Take the Paseo Marítimo (Avinguda Gabriel Roca) and exit toward Moll Vell. There are some parking areas nearby, but availability can be limited during busy hours.

By Bicycle
Palma has a network of bike lanes, and Moll Vell is easily accessible by bike from many parts of the city. You can also use public or private bike rental services.
